Adding a bit more diversity to its ranks, Marvel today cast Tessa Thompson (Creed, Dear White People) in next year’s Thor: Ragnarok. With Deadline also reporting that Natalie Portman will not be joining Thor in his third cinematic outing, it is said Thompson will fill in the love interest.
Deadline’s sources also told them her character is “a kind of superhero and will appear in other Marvel films as well.”
This of course has led to some speculation as to who her character will be.
Some of the more popular, if not just easily believable, suggestions include Enchantress or Valkyrie.
While Enchantress is mostly known as a villain (famously using magic to control Hulk’s mind in various media), she has been known to have a relationship with Marvel’s Norse god of thunder. Not only that, but she is quite a favorite character of the comics to boot.
Which brings us to Valkyrie, the one-time love interest of Thor, who has a popular fanbase and was even included in concept art for the much maligned Thor: The Dark World.
I myself am going to go rogue and predict a retcon of another Marvel character who has ties to one of Marvel’s hottest properties.
Angela, or Aldriff Odinsdottir, is a Neil Gaiman character whom he took to Marvel from the Spawn comics. She was retconned to be Thor’s long-lost sister, and became part of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
It would be quite a play to further integrate each of its properties with each other, seeing as how they already plan on Hulk being a large part of Thor: Ragnarok.
Sure, she can’t be in an incestuous relationship with Thor, but anything can be retconned away, right Spidey?
Who will Tessa Thompson be?
Will Thor: Ragnarok shape up from it’s predecessor?
Speculate in the comments below.
