SyFy is looking to get into the superhero business by ordering a pilot about Superman’s home planet of Krypton. The script comes from David S. Goyer and Damian Kindler has been tapped as the showrunner.
The series, called Krypton, is going to be set two generations before the destruction of the planet Krypton, and follow Superman’s grandfather as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save Krypton from its eventual fate. The project is going to be a special arrangement with the family of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel.
Goyer has been a writer on all of Warner Bros.’ Batman and Superman movies since Batman Begins and up til Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. He was also the writer of the Blade trilogy. Kindler most recently executive produced Sleepy Hollow and previously produced Sanctuary on SyFy.
From how far ahead of krypton’s destruction the story is set, we are not likely to see Kal-El or his little cousin Kara anytime soon. But with what we know of Kal-El’s family history, there is sure to be a fair amount of space opera political intrigue; hopefully that doesn’t mean sitting through a bunch of senate meetings like in the Star Wars prequels.
