Doc Savage

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, along with having the most fitting nickname ever conceived, has been itching to get into the superhero circle for a while. To many, it’s a wonder why he hasn’t been given a role already; LOOK AT HIM! He’s a building with limbs and a smile that can mend all the world’s issues.

For a little over a year now, talks about The Rock joining the cast of DC’s rebooted Green Lantern film (rumored to be titled Green Lantern Corps)  have been floating around.

A little bit after the news about his joining hit the interwebs, we found out that he turned down the role in order to pursue another DC property as a villain, Shazam‘s Black Adam. Very little has been told about the project as of recent, other than the aimed release window of 2019 and that the film will veer away from the super dark and gritty tones of the previous DC films and instead opt for a more light-hearted and comedic tone.

Well, Mr. The Rock has acquired himself yet another superhero movie role as none other than The Man of Bronze himself, Clark ‘Doc’ Savage.

It’s OFFICIAL: For all comic book fans you already know the world’s first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the “Man of Bronze” himself Clark “Doc” Savage. Want to thank my bud director/writer Shane Black and his writing team Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry for flying in from LA and sitting with me and our @sevenbucksprod’s producer @hhgarcia41 on this Memorial Day weekend to chop up creative and break story on this very cool project. Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about “Doc” Savage is that he’s the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called “Man of Bronze”, retreats to his “Fortress of Solitude” in the Arctic etc etc. Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women’s perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything. But here’s the #1 reason I’m excited to become Doc Savage.. HE’S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO! Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious. After speaking for hours w/ Shane Black I can see why the creator of Superman took only the best parts of Doc Savage and leaving the “weirdo” part behind. But to us, it’s that “weirdo” part that makes Clark “Doc” Savage dope! Can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one of a kind character. #ItsOfficial #WorldsFirstSuperhero #GeniusIntellect #PhysicalSpecimen #FnLoveableWeirdo #DocSavage

If you are an average human being, something The Rock is far from, you probably just glanced over all that text. I don’t blame you; it is a lot.

What The Rock basically says, along with announcing his newest role, is a quick summary of the character he will be playing and the similarities Superman shares with Clark ‘Doc’ Savage (first name, nickname, Fortress of Solitude, super strength and agility, and impenetrable skin).

The film will be written and directed by Shane Black (The Nice Guys and Iron Man 3), and with the help of fellow co-writers Chuck Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi.

Black, Mondry, and Bagarozzi will make sure to stay as true to the source material as possible by keeping all the wacky and social awkwardness that Doc Savage is known for.

Nothing else about the project can be found, but hearing that The Rock will be able to play the role of a graceless, confident weirdo with great comedic timing is enough for me to jump on board. Although many only see him as a giant rock with limbs, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has shown signs of having some great comedic chops. Just look at his improved comeback in Fast & Furious 6; the man knows how to get a laugh out of audiences.

All in all, I’m excited to see The Rock embrace his inner goof-ball; even if it won’t come to big screen for another 5 years.
