Remakes are rarely something gamers look forward to. No matter how HD’er (it’s a word, I invented it so shush) they make they game, it still always feels like the same experience, minus the first-run enjoyment.
In the case of Insomniac’s newest remake, Ratchet & Clank, we might be seeing a different side to this whole remake business model. Obviously graphics are going to vary drastically since the original game is a whole 2 generations away, but in terms of gameplay it looks like the devs are aiming really hard at making sure long-time fans of the series feel that same first-run enjoyment they felt back in 2002 when the first Ratchet & Clank game release for the PS2.
Both the PS2 and PS4 versions of the game feature a third-person perspective (GOOD!), but the change in lighting and camera movement really helps the PS4 version distinguish itself from its original.
You’ll notice (mostly in the elevator scenes) that the new, more cinematic camera movement will allow players to see the 8th gen version of Aridia, which is jam-packed with great-looking textures, updated enemies, visually enhanced weapons, and enough scenery to make long-time fans foam at the mouth.
Some voices have changed here and there, but that was fully expected considering the game is now 14 years old.
The only drawback I found was in regards to character movement during cut scenes. In the PS2 Ratchet & Clank, the cut scenes had the characters move their limbs all over the place and the over-dramatic gesturing really complemented the cartoonish action in the gameplay. In this PS4 remake they characters become a little too robotic. Most of the emotions are coming from the face, and their arms either stay still or do that Fallout thing where they just kind of look like the character is mid-fall.
I hope that the robotic mannerisms evolve into the cartoonish ones we all loved and enjoyed further into the game, but it’s not something that should be considered a deal breaker. The game still looks like a lot of fun regardless, and will give players just enough enjoyment to last them until the release of the Ratchet & Clank movie which comes out April 26, 2016; only 14 days after Ratchet & Clank releases for the PS4!
PS2 Ratchet & Clank was 2002.
PS4 Ratchet & Clank comes out 2016.
Ratchet & Clank game comes out April 12, 2016
Ratchet & Clank movie comes out April 26, 2016
2016 – 2002 = 14
26 – 12 = 14
Insomniac, did you plan this!?
