Guardians

I just watched the teaser trailer for Guardians, a new Superhero Russian movie coming out in 2017.

Now, before you continue, please note that I’m not a movie buff. I’m lucky if I can squeeze in a movie to watch every couple of months.

So, what did I think of the trailer? Well, the entirety of the trailer is in Russian, but luckily enough, I can speak Russian, so I didn’t need the subtitles. Basically, the entire premise is what you would expect from a superhero movie teaser. Something evil and bad and huge has destroyed Russia. There’s this underground team of superheroes that no one knows about, and they’re the only ones who can stop it.

This is where most of my problems with the trailer lie. It’s a bit overdone. And by “a bit”, I mean needlessly shoved into every “team of superheroes” movie to date. Even the superpowers seem overused. We’ve got telekinesis man, weird-time-stopper dude, sexy-turn-into-goo lady, fast-speed-lightning guy, weird-but-kinda-cool-CGI-water girl, turn-hands-into-rocks man, and of course, a werebear. That isn’t to say that the trailer is bad though. It’s got the usual suspense and climax structure, and the shots have all been used a hundred times before.

I mean, I barely see any superhero movies at all, and even I can spot these tropes. It seems to me that the entire trailer is hinging and heavily relying on one thing: it’s in Russia, and Russia isn’t known to do stuff like this. It even says so in the beginning.

So, in the end, will I watch it, and should you?

I’ll probably tell myself to see it, but then never actually see it. If you’re a big fan of superhero movies and tropes don’t bother you, sure go see it, but otherwise, I don’t think it’s worth seeing, or at least in theaters.
