Some franchises don’t die, they just take a long break. In proving so, Jonás Cuarón, director of border drama Desierto (and son of Alfonso Cuarón, director of Gravity and Children of Men) is re-teaming with his film’s star Gael Garcia Bernal to reboot Zorro.
The film is entitled Z and sets Zorro in the near future. For reference, Children of Men is also set in the near future, and oh what a wondrous post apocalyptic near future it was.
I for one am imagining Zorro Beyond, a post apocalyptic near future where a vigilante named Z rids the streets of fascist acolytes of oppression. We later find out Z is cloned from the DNA of the original Zorro.
The original swashbuckling Zorro stories actually inspired the creation of Batman, so much so that its canon in the comics that Bruce Wayne and deceased his parents saw The Mark of Zorro on that fateful night.
“I have always loved Gael for this role,” said Mark Amin of Sobini Films who is producing with LanticaMedia. “Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.”
Garcia Bernal recently won a Golden Globe for his work on Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle, which follows the drama and debauchery behind the scenes of a famed orchestra. He is best known for his work in Y tu Mama Tambien and Amores Perros. Cuarón is best known for working with his father on his film’s such as Gravity.
Bernal and Cuarón’s previous collaboration Desierto will see wider release by the end of the year. Desierto is a thriller that follows immigrants crossing the border in search of a better life while being hunted down by vigilantes.
