After months of rumors, Marvel and Disney finally confirmed that the planned Inhumans movie is being removed from the Marvel Phase 3 lineup. Early reports from last year suggested that a rift between Marvel’s television and film divisions had led to the movie being scrapped, however, today’s reports point to numerous scheduling changes in the past two years.
Back when Marvel’s Phase 3 was set into production, no one could have predicted that Sony would allow Spider-Man to join the MCU, as Sony had their own shared universe plans for Spidey, including an already in-production Sinister Six sequel. The timeliness of the Sony hack allowed Marvel to scoop Spidey for an iconic role in Captain America: Civil War during the movie’s shooting.
Not only did Marvel score for Civil War, but it also got to add a co-produced MCU Spidey standalone, Spider-Man: Homecoming. If the advance reviews are telling enough, we have a strong new Spidey in Tom Holland for that franchise.
Another unforeseen event was the mild, yet surprising, success of Ant-Man (which I consider one of the top five MCU movies). The success of not only Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, but the wild card of Michael Peña, led to the addition of Ant-Man and The Wasp to Phase 3.
Outside of the MCU, the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is leading Disney to bet on another old franchise, Indiana Jones; which was scheduled the week after Inhumans was originally scheduled.
According to reports, Inhumans being pulled doesn’t quite mean we won’t get to see Black Bolt and Medusa on the big screen, only that we may have to wait a bit longer.
However, if initial reports about internal conflict between Marvel’s television and film branches hold true, we may have to settle for seeing the Inhuman royal family on the small screen. Since the announcement of the Inhumans movie, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been laying the Inhuman groundwork by revealing one of its leads as an Inhuman and cementing the lore behind terrigen.
Should we wait for an Inhumans movie?
Should they just use the Inhumans on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so that show can actually matter?
Tell us in the comments.
