Well, this came as an absolute surprise to the gaming community today. Disney has been rolling in the dough (matter of speaking, but possibly really rolling in it) thanks in part to their toys to life creation, Disney Infinity.
The company has announced it will cease operation, design and creation on the Disney Infinity series. Further eliminating any chance of a possible Disney Infinity 4.0. Despite this announcement, the company has stated that three more sets are set to come out. After that, the company will close down the game development. This decision comes at the company wanting to focus on different IPs and television series.
Disney’s Consumer Products Chairman had this to say:
“After a thorough evaluation, we have modified our approach to console gaming and will transition exclusively to a licensing model,” he said. “This shift in strategy means we will cease production of Disney Infinity, where the lack of growth in the toys-to-life market, coupled with high development costs, has created a challenging business model. This means that we will be shutting down Avalanche, our internal studio that developed the game. This was a difficult decision that we did not take lightly given the quality of Disney Infinity and its many passionate fans.”
As a result, the game developer put in charge of the Disney Infinity series was closed down. Resulting in over 300 jobs lost.
As someone who bought into Disney Infinity. I’m disappointed by this result. Not only was this cherished by a many of people, but this was played by so many children/parents. A huge misstep by Disney.
